What people may not know is that running deep in the DNA of our company is something which plagues our country and the world more than ever: mental illness. Even before the pandemic, the United States was showing a historic rise in mental health and addiction, particularly among young people. As the self-proclaimed “therapy generation,” millennials have experienced depression, anxiety, learning issues and other disorders at increasing rates in recent years. This past June the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported some of the highest rates of mental illness.

“Chihuly: Creating in the glass bubble”
We can’t travel and so many of our projects involve working all over the world and in different parts of the country. We had three different gallery shows - in London, Toronto and Seattle. Not being able to travel, we had to show those galleries how to install the shows without us.

Structure is more liberating than confining. In running a growing studio, I had to transition what resembled a start-up culture to a team that worked at scale. In the arts, structure is often perceived as counter to the spirit of creativity, but I’ve found that setting up an organizational system has allowed employees to collaborate and create better than before.
